Here's some sketches from my sketch book for the Judge Dredd story i've just finished for 2000ad, drawn very quickly....
Sunday, 28 June 2009
the 2000ad Judge Dredd ''fatties'' story will be finished today ,it's been alot of work (a cast of thousands) but a lot of fun too, the art style was drawn in a cartoon-ish way to suite the story, i hope the readers and Tharg will like it enough to offer me more Dredd work in the future.
as i was looking around on the web i found this classic old cover featuring a fattie drawn by the great Ron Smith i liked the character so i decided i would draw him in the story as a cameo ,see if you can see him when the story is published.
along with Mike Mcmahon Ron was another fav artist of mine on Dredd ,
loved his stuff in 2000ad and he did fantastic work on the Judge Dredd daily newspaper strip for the Daily Star

One artist i have followed over the years for his writing as well as his art is Alan Davis ,he's a great storyteller, great draftsman and he has the knack of drawing characters who have the ability to look very graceful and dynamic on the page at the same time ,
if I'm stuck sometimes for a pose or if i need reminding how better to draw a figure i flick through some of Alan's comics ,i never do a direct swipe but i do try to learn from him.
to my mind Alan's work is a blend of Frank Bellamy, Neal Adams and Jim Aparo and sometimes you can see the odd nod to Gil Kane .
i would love to see one day Alan Davis draw and write Garth or Dan Dare but sadly i doubt that would ever happen.
I'm always entertained by Alan's work be it for Marvel or D.C comics.
he never hands in a below standard job so he always inspires.
one publication i picked up worth buying is
Twomorrow publishing's Modern Masters vol 1 which feature a interview with Alan plus interviews with inkers Paul Neary and Mark Farmer plus there's loads of art ,roughs, pencils and inked pages ,its a fantastic book.

johnny retro returns to judge dredd 2000ad after a five year break .
i last drew dredd in 2000ad way back in 1993 .
this new story is a very very funny wagner classic ,i guess it takes a big fat artist to draw the fatties of mega city, and my art style for it is a homage to the mighty mike mcmahon
art copyright rebellion 2009
in 1998 i drew this poster and sent it to Harry Enfield about the idea of maybe doing a Harry Enfield and chums comic annual ,Harry sent me back a hand written note saying ''thanks for the idea and that he would sieve it in his porridge of his mind''.... and nothing happened ,shame as i would have loved to draw that project
anyone out there can check out the show i guess on dvd or youtube

Astarate was great to draw and again nice colouring by Alan Craddock it's a shame back in 2003 we got no interest in the project ,sadly this happens a lot in comics there must be loads of hidden gems out there from creatives of submissions/ projects that never saw the light of day in print.

I created Tiger Steel in 2005 for a jewellery company in the u.s called TATTOOED STEEL the owner ex-surf champion Wyatt Simmons wanted a strong female hero to appear on his metal cuff range , i spent quite a while creating her look ,environment and villains , this four page strip was a introduction to her world and character as you can see i had a lot of fun writing and drawing this one.

THE FEATHERED SERPENT was a project i worked on with Kevin Gunstone i drew this pin-up and 8 pages of strip art and we sent it to different publishers in the u.s and the u.k in 1999 but alas nothing happened ,which was a shame as the story was great basically Quetzalcoatl returns back to earth to save it from being destroyed by an awakened fire god bent on destroying the earth in fire and chaos.
Kevin was a great comic writer who now works as a D.J last i heard, he had a great passion for comics and art and it's a shame he's not writing mainstream comics , maybe one day he'll return.
this is the first time i've shown this pin-up to the public domain

Paul Stanley from Kiss is one of the best rock performers still treading the arena boards this pic was drawn in the 90's for a fan zine for Kiss i don't think it got used.
Stanley's solo albums are great too especially his recent one ''live to win'' very pleased that after 10yrs Kiss are recording a new album.

This pin up was drawn in 1998 for a u.k tribute folio for the late great Archie Goodwin , i was always a big fan of the Manhunter and last year at B.I.C'S i was lucky enough to meet Walt Simonson , i gave him the original artwork , Walt liked the work and it was a pleasure to meet one of my artistic idols

In 2005 i was asked by a young chap called Henry who's father Phil runs wonderful shops of magical hand crafted, gifts and jewellery from Indonesia and America called RAPHAEL if i would be interested in designing some fantasy characters that would be hand carved in wood from skilled craftsmen in Indonesia, i said ok and here are those designs a Wizard and a Elf , as you can see they are not too detailed due to the fact the sculptor carving from my designs would be doing so in wood, i also designed a Goblin character which will get carved if these sell well and there will be more to follow if there is a market for them .
any way a fun little project to draw.
each figurine is unique as they are ALL HAND CARVED so no mass production they are a limited edition, this was wonderful to see when i received my comp figurines a mixture of west meet east artistic skills
the sculptors do the work under fair trade
if you like the figurines or want to know more you can contact Raphael crafts via my link at the side of the blog which will put you on to their website or copy and paste this link

This was painted on a large white board in freezing wet weather outside of the venue for the first Birmingham International Comic convention a few years ago using a thickish brush, i remember as a child reading black and white reprints of the Phantom always a cool looking character to me
''the ghost that walks''
like millions of people in the u.k i watched Britain's got Talent on itv , i was amazed by the dance group Diversity ,all young guys who dance for the fun of it but all are just amazing to watch ,i know this isn't my usual type of post but when i watched these guys perform it was like performance art ,dynamic, funny, cute (the young boy dressed as superman was brilliant and the transformer moment just so so clever)
i just think that they have with their team leader /choreographer Ashley Banjo have a terrific future in entertainment they are all real stars and I'm sure alot of pop stars would love them to back them on tour,
it just goes to show that with alot of hard work and team work anything can happen, I'm really pleased their dream came true and I'm sure the Queen will be amazed when they perform for her later in the year.
well done Diversity!!
